How to Become a Louisiana notary public

1. Fill out application to Qualify for Appointment as Notary Public

We have included a link directly to the Application to Qualify for Appointment. That application can also be reached by visiting the Louisiana Secretary of States web site.

2. Apply to take the State Required Notary Exam

You can apply to take the State Required Exam by filling out the Examination Registration Form. The Application to Qualify and the Examination Registration Form must be approved by the office of the Secretary of State. There is a deadline for signing up to take the exam and it is 45 days prior to the exam.

3. Prepare for the Examination

The Louisiana Notary Public Examination Official Study Guide is available to purchase by completing the Notary Public Study Guide Application. You can purchase the book by fax, email, or mail.

4. Purchase Bond Package

Submit your Notary Examination and Qualify Application

Send the Examination Registration along with the Application to Qualify along with fees to the Louisiana Secretary of States office.

The Examination Registration fee is $75 and the
Application to Qualify fee is $25. Both must be filed with the Secretary of State’s office no
later than 45 days prior to the date of the examination. This registration and fee is nonrefundable
and non-transferable.
